The practical tests in Dundee are carried out here.
Test routes for driving test centres are no longer published. This shouldn't cause any problems, as you should be of a standard to drive on any type of road. The routes that were previously published can be found here. These routes are just an indication of where you might be taken. They can be changed and altered at any time to fit in with local road and weather conditions etc.
It's important to try and not arrive too early before your test time. This prevents you getting in the way of previous tests.
Once at the test centre, you will take a seat in the waiting area where t
he examiner will come out, call your name, and ask you to sign an insurance declaration for the the vehicle used for test.
While your signing the declaration, the examiner will check your drivers licence and theory test certificate. Before making your way to the car, the examiner will ask if you'd like your instructor to come on test with you. This is advisable, as your instructor can see first hand any problems that crop up.
You will now make your way outside, here the examiner will ask you to read a number plate to check your eyesight, then you will lead the examiner to your car. Here the examiner will ask you to answer 2 show me/tell me questions.
Next you will be asked to get in the car and set yourself up. Meanwhile the examiner will check round the car to make sure it all looks legal etc. The examiner will now join you in the car, and, explain all about the test before setting off.
The test will last round about 40 minutes. The examiner will expect you to follow the road straight ahead, unless told otherwise. Should the examiner want you to go right or left, then, he will give you clear and early instruction of where to go.
During the test, the examiner may ask you to carry out a 'controlled stop' (or may be referred to as 'the emergency stop' ) Not every test will get this, only about 1 in 3.
You will also be asked to carry out 1 manoeuvre.
These will be either,
Turn in the road
Parallel park
Bay park
Left reverse
The bay parking will either be conducted at the start, or, end of the test. All other manoeuvres are done at some point during the test.
Throughout the test, the examiner is checking you carry out everything in a good, safe and orderly manner. They will ask you to pull up at the side of the road up to 6 times during the test. Once pulled up, they will then ask you to carry o
n as normal when your ready. Don't worry about this, they just want to make sure you carry out full and proper observations, and act on what you see.
Part of the driving test now includes 10 minutes of independent driving. This can be carried out at any point during the test. The examiner will ask you to pull up at the side of the road, then explain the independent part of the test is about to begin. This will be where the examiner will ask you to follow a series of road signs or directions. For example, he may ask you to follow the signs for the city centre. All you then do is drive away when ready and look out for, and
follow the relevant signs.
Some areas may not have many road signs to follow, in this case the examiner will show you a diagram. This will have 3 directions to follow. An example of this diagram can be found here.
If during the independent part of the drive you forget which signs to follow, just ask the examiner. Likewise, should you not remember the directions you were given, then just ask. Its also worth remembering, this part of the test is not to test your navigational skills, but to test your ability to carry out correct road procedure without being prompted. So should you take a wrong turn, then don't worry, the examiner will get you back onto the correct road.
Providing you drive to the expected standards, then, you will pass. Don't try to 'alter' your driving style to 'impress' the examiner, just do as your instructor has been teaching you.
Once back at the test centre, the examiner will tell you the test is over, and ask you to switch the engine off. At this point he will finish off marking the test and ask if you would like your instructor to be present for the de-brief. It's advisable to say 'yes'. That way your instructor can hear from the examiner exactly what happened on test, good or bad.
